Districtly Speaking... Print E-mail
A message from Asst. Superintendent Steven Seaford

In the coming months, you will hear a lot about the South Pasadena Unified School District's budget and the steps that we'll need to take to respond to an ever-worsening State budget crisis.  Here is what we know so far:

  • For 2009-10, the District has projected total income of about $32,140,000 and expenditures of about $34,773,230.  Deficit spending of about $2.6 million dollars has reduced a once healthy fund balance to an unrestricted balance of $2,802,000 at the end of this year.
  • As of December, in order to maintain this ending fund balance in 2010-11 (which is recommended by the LA County Office of Education) the District has projected a need to reduce expenditures in 2010-11 by $2.4 million.
  • In January, the Governor presented his proposed budget. Although he claimed that he would be protecting education, his budget includes an additional reduction of $225 per pupil in state revenue limit funds.  For South Pasadena this will amount to another reduction of about $1,040,000 in 2010-11 and in future years.
Bottom Line: total amount of cuts that need to be made in our budget for 2010-11 add up to over $3.2 million. About 92% of our District's budget is people-employees salaries and benefits.  To realize these cuts, we will need to look at all possible ways of cutting expenditures, most of which will inevitably involve employee expenditures.

Make a Difference. Join the SPEF Board. Print E-mail
The South Pasadena Educational Foundation is looking for community members interested in joining its board for the 2010-11 school year.

Started in 1980 by parents facing school funding cuts due to Prop 13, SPEF continues to enhance educational opportunities by raising funds for SPUSD. The all-volunteer working board of 30-35 members serve for a term of three years each.

"Each year we seek out committed individuals who work well with a large group and possess diverse talents and experiences," said Ann VerKuilen, VP Board Development.

The non-profit organization meets on a monthly basis on Monday evenings. In addition to fundraising, the group is responsible for an Afterschool Enrichment program at all 3 elementary schools and the Middle School, Summer School at all grade levels and the Fifth Grade Musical, a favorite long-time tradition of SPUSD. In September, SPEF delivered checks to the district totalling more than $500,000.

Gathering Welcomes New Superintendent Print E-mail

Gathering Welcomes New SuperintendentMore than 70 SPEF donors gathered at the home of Ruby Kalra and Ed Elsner on the evening of January 13 to meet the South Pasadena Unified School District's new superintendent, Joel Shapiro.  Those in attendance included not only parents of children who currently attend South Pasadena schools, but also many steadfast SPEF supporters whose children graduated from the local schools decades ago.  After describing some highlights of his substantial and varied background in public education, Mr. Shapiro fielded questions from the audience for more than an hour.  The evening provided an excellent opportunity for Mr. Shapiro and the assembled guests to engage in the type of open and thoughtful communication that will make his tenure as superintendent a success.

Thanks to Thinkwell for Laptop and Furniture Donations to SPEFStarving students?  No, helpful community members.  SPEF Board members Joe Zenas, Brett Barnard, and Bill Fleming recently moved four new work stations into the SPEF office.  The work stations, tables, cabinets and several new laptop computers are part of a generous donation to SPEF from thinkwell.   Thanks too to StorBox for transportation services.

Double Your Donation With Matching Funds Print E-mail

Double your donationDid you know that many employers will match a donation you make to a non-profit organization? Matching funds are a great way to double your donation without going any deeper into your pockets-all for a great cause!  SPEF will gladly do the legwork to find out if your company has a matching fund policy.  Just provide us with your name, contact info and the name of your employer.  We'll research whether they provide matching donations, request and process the paperwork. Click here for a complete list of local employers that will match your donation to SPEF. For more information, contact Eli Haarlander at (626) 441-5810 ext. 1165.
